A Beginner’s Guide to Digital Photography

by Ahmed Anwar on May 27, 2009

This is a beginner’s guide to digital photography with the use of Digital SLR Systems. This guide is intended for those who are serious about digital photography. The camera that we will be referring to in this guide is a digital SLR, the one being used by professional photographers. So if you are ready, let’s begin.

When using a digital SLR, the most distinct feature that it has is looking through its viewfinder is just like looking through the lens. Whatever you see in the view finder is basically how it will look when you take it. That’s the beauty of a digital SLR. What’s also great about the digital SLRs is that you can change the lens depending on the effect or result you want to achieve. If you want to alter how it will look like, then changing the lens will be the key. There are technical details to explain why these effects happen when you choose a different kind of lens, but knowing that this certain lens makes your photos appear in a wide angle, or this certain lens allows you to shoot better at night, is far more important to learn. After all, you just need to know which lens to use in different kinds of situations.

In digital photography, specifically when using digital SLR’s, the amount of light that gets in through the lens is the most important thing. It focuses onto the image sensor, the silicon inside that digital SLR that enables you to record that image you are taking a shot of. That amount of light taken in is what we call the exposure. It is very important to master the correct exposure you take in when shooting pictures. After all, it will define how your digital photos will look. At the same time, adjusting it will provide different results that can sometimes create a fun effect to your photos. Long exposure is a creative effect that you can do, once you have mastered controlling exposure when taking shots.

When using digital SLR’s you also have the ability to adjust the depth of field. The depth of field allows you to focus more on the objects that are closer to you and by doing so, you will be able to blur out the background to your liking. It is very hard to blur background, also known as “bokeh”, when using a point and shoot camera. And so, digital SLR’s come in handy when this effect is needed in the picture. Blurring out the background has the kind of effect like you have your own studio and it’s just a backdrop. Many more effects can be done with the use of digital SLR’s.
