Are you finding yourself getting lured to the world of digital photography? Don’t worry because you are not alone. Millions of people around the globe are now into digital photography, be it for casual use, serious hobby, or for a professional career. Because of the many features and functions of the World Wide Web, including social networking and photo sharing, more and more people dive into digital photography to be able to share great pictures with their family and friends. Aside from that, digital photography is widely used in ecommerce. Online stores have to be able to feature their products clearly and so digital photography is a must. So if you are already interested, then here is a feature on digital photography basics: the camera. After all, it is the most basic thing you need when getting into digital photography.

Minolta DiMage 5 Digital Camera

You can’t get into digital photography without a camera. Of course without a digital camera, you won’t be able to take pictures. So knowing what camera to buy and use is one of the digital photography basics that we will be discussing here. Over the past couple of years, digital cameras have tremendously improved in terms of visual quality and price. Previously, those digital cameras that took great pictures reached a thousand dollars. But over time, the prices have significantly dropped. At the same time, the mega pixels these digital cameras can accommodate have increased vastly. Those digital cameras of today that are near-professional quality can go as low as $300 to $500. But of course, we are talking about the semi-digital SLR’s or the point-and-shoot digital cameras. They already produce decent-looking and high-quality images but the features and functions of such aren’t as sophisticated as the Digital SLR’s of today.

When you decide that you want to take digital photography more seriously, and you are even thinking of getting into such a career, then perhaps the digital SLR’s are better for you. Point and shoot cameras won’t work for you. They make be able to produce great photos but they have their limitations. For one, these point and shoot cameras take bad photos at night. You won’t be able to take landscape photos during night time. They have limited zoom capabilities. And when you compare the quality of the photos from point and shoot cameras against the professionally taken photos, you will surely notice that they aren’t the same. The photos taken from a Digital SLR are far better as compared to the point and shoot cameras.

Digital photography is becoming very popular these days as the prices of digital cameras lowers for both compact cameras and DSLR. The competition between companies, such as Canon, Nikon and Sony, has pushed them to lower the prices of digital cameras. This drove a lot of people into owning a “professional style” camera such as DSLR. Because of this, there has been a significant increase of beginners and enthusiasts who are into photography. If you are one of them, you definitely need to know the basics in photography in order to have better quality images. Taking pictures is not simple as it may seem. Read through some of the tips below to learn more.

1.Handling the camera. Both hands should be used in handling the camera. Holding the camera with one hand tends to have more “camera shake”, which would result to blurred images. Place your elbows close to your body and try to lean on something, like a wall, to provide stability while handling your camera.

2.Keep both eyes open when looking at the view finder. This may be difficult for starters, but having both eyes open can be very helpful in getting better shots. Having the other eye closed will just limit your field of vision. For example, you want to photograph a moving subject, such as an animal. It will be hard for you to follow your subject when viewing with one eye since you can’t see where the animal would go next. All you need is practice looking at the view finder with both eyes open to help you see more action and to get better shots.

3.Use a tripod. This will also help you get better shots since it prevents movements on your camera while you shoot.

4.Play with the aperture (f). Take note that the lower the f number, the larger the aperture. Large apertures are used when you want to focus on the subject and blur out the background. These are especially used when taking portrait and macro shots.

5.Play with the shutter speed. Fast shutter speeds are used to capture moving subjects. Using different shutter speeds will result to different kinds or qualities of images, therefore it is important to experiment on this. Remember that getting the right shutter speed and aperture combination will definitely result to great quality of pictures. This may be hard to achieve for starters but all you need to do is practice.

In today’s generation, almost everyone now have their own digital cameras or at the least carry a borrowed one whenever they are about to go somewhere worth taking photographs of. The world we live in is now like a digital haven. We embrace all things digital. The birth of computers and the World Wide Web has certainly changed a lot about how we do our day to day transactions, dealings, and what have you’s. Same goes with taking photographs. We have moved on to digital camera and they are here to stay. If you are one of those who are new to digital photography, then perhaps this might be helpful to you. Below is a beginner’s guide to digital photography. Read on to learn more today!

People have become more and more engrossed with the use of digital cameras. After all, dealing with films and having it developed, are just time consuming and unreliable. The trend has become digital cameras. They have become like a staple whenever people are going out of their homes. Digital cameras are always brought along to capture memorable moments. What’s more is that you can instantly see what you’re taking a photo of because of the live preview that these new digital cameras have.

Are there different types of digital photography out there?

Yes, there are different types of digital photography. What we call the average family capturing their memoirs is simply family photography. But when things go beyond this level, we can classify them into several types. There are those who do artistic photography like artists who focus on photography. They showcase their work in art galleries and such. On the other hand, there are others who get into event photography. These are the people who make a living out of taking professional photographs of special events like wedding, birthdays, christening, debuts, and other events out there. Aside from these three the rest can be classified into documentary photography, portrait photography as seen in studios, photojournalism, nature photography, underwater photography, satellite photography, and advertising photography among others. If you are getting into photography, you can choose among these types in which you want to head on to. The things you need to learn will depend on the direction you want to take. At the same time, knowing what type of photographer you want to be will determine the type of digital camera you should buy.

Are you a beginner who wants to learn how to take better pictures? Digital photography isn’t something you learn overnight. When you are just new to this world, you’re just like a toddler learning how to walk and talk among other things. Thus, you should understand that you must be patient in learning how digital photography works. Know that at first, you’ll have to learn how to walk first before you can start running. That goes for digital photography. So if you want to start learning basic digital photography tips, then continue reading below.

1.One of the most basic tips that you should know is that getting the right or the perfect exposure plays a big factor in producing great photos. You must be able to understand your own digital camera or digital SLR and be able to know the settings you need in order to set that perfect exposure. Make sure you know the basic controls over the photo’s density.

2.Another important factor when getting into the world of digital photography is the shutter speed. Learning how to control your digital camera’s speed is a factor that enables you to improve those pictures. If you learn how you can control the length of time that the shutter is open will allow you better visual control. You get to control more than just controlling the lightness of your photo – whether you like it to appear light or dark. You will need to learn about shutter speeds more as you dig deep into the world of digital photography.

3.The depth of field is another basic digital photography term that plays an important factor in taking photos. You will need to learn how to focus on the subject and be able to blur the background. To give you an analogy, the aperture of a camera is just like an eye’s iris. So the light that hits the sensor enables you to change how much of your subject matter must be in focus. If you have a busy background, then might as well adjust accordingly so the background gets blurred and your subjects stay as the focus.

4.ISO sensitivity and film speed are also basic terminologies to learn in the business. Just make sure before you start taking shots, you must be aware of how to adjust your ISO settings and film speed. It’s true that shutter speed, ISO settings, as well as Aperture work hand in hand together to come up with smooth and great-looking photos.

Digital photography is not something you can just get into easily. It does not follow that once you get a camera, you qualify as a photographer right away. There is a difference between taking pictures for the sake of having a remembrance of the perfect scene and passionately taking pictures that can be qualified as an art. Take a look at the images taken by expert photographers. Isn’t it they are incredibly stunning? Those pictures are not simply a result of instinct. Photography is something you have to study. A lot of reading has to be done and for some, reading books and articles is not enough. They enroll classes or workshops. If you are one of those thinking of trying out various photography workshops out there, here are some facts you have to know.

1.	First of all, you have to realize that most well-known photography workshops are not cheap. They can really be pricey, which is why you have to be determined that this is what you really want before enrolling. Although there are also some workshops offering cheaper rates, it is better to get feedbacks from their students before applying.

2.	It is always best to know a little before enrolling. Yes, they might teach you down to the very basics of photography, but you might as well research beforehand. Knowing the terms used in photography and at least practicing what you have learned through reading won’t hurt.

3.	Most workshops value one to one discussions or interactions between the mentor and the student, although such workshops can be more expensive. Remember, the lesser the students, the greater the chance of learning more things. Photography should not entirely be lecture based. Actual photo shoots are needed to use whatever you have learned. It is during these actual photo shoots where students usually need guidance. If a teacher is handling a lot of students, it is highly unlikely that the teacher could check each and every student if they are doing the right thing.

4.	Joining workshops is also a venue to gain new friends with the same hobby as yours. Workshop is not only a place where you can learn from your mentor, but from other students as well. Getting to know more people interested with photography can possibly help you in the future. After the workshop, you can easily get in touch with them if you have any questions about photography. Your classmates can be your helping hand.

5.	Lastly, workshops usually give you a chance to take great pictures since they bring you to places or give you subjects that could bring out your creativity, making it worth capturing. Something to add on to your portfolio.

In the world of digital photography, there are so many things to learn and so many things to consider. You can say that the world of digital photography is a world full of complications. There are so many things you have to adjust depending on the scenario, the object of photography, the time, the lighting, the setting, and so on. Thus, a digital photography tutorial is most likely to be the most important thing you have to have when just stepping foot into the world of digital photography. Here is a short tutorial on Digital Photography that can help you get started.

1. First things first, when shooting objects in your digital camera, make sure that you turn the camera on the appropriate side or orientation. It could be landscape or portrait just like your usual office document that you can turn. It’s important that you maximize the space you have. So make sure that you follow the orientation of your subject. For example, if you are taking a photo of a tall building, then you must hold your camera in a vertical position or a portrait orientation rather than the landscape or normal position of a digital camera. Those pixels will be wasted if you choose to just crop it later on. Make use of the space so follow the orientation of your subject.

2. Another important thing when taking photos is to pay attention to framing. Do you need all the background in there or perhaps it’s better to zoom in on the subject? On other occasions, a little background will help or complement the subject. It’s best to try out different shots and choose what looks best.

3. We all know by now that lighting is important. But aside from that, the direction of lighting is so important too. Photography is all lighting and how it falls on your subject. Where do you want the shadows to fall? Or perhaps you don’t want any shadow on your photo. If that is the case, then you will need more lighting to surround your subject. Just take a look at photo studios and you’ll understand what I mean. Now, if you are taking photos outdoors, it’s best to take photos during the day. However, make sure that the sun is positioned low in the sky. Otherwise the subject’s eyes will be in shadow. It is best to take photos in the early morning or late in the afternoon.

Well, although that’s kind of creepy, it’s a good place to start. A question I hear all of the time is “How do I become better at photography? Look at all of those cool pictures up there, how do they look so good?” Well it’s not like anyone can wave a magic wand and have it happen for you. It takes a little while to build up to the level of professional.

Let’s get started with some tips to make you a better photographer. There’s no “order” of things to do to get better. Mix and match and play around with some of them and you should start to see progress.

1. Spark a “Photography Conversation”

You probably know that you’re not the best photographer in the world, and if you’re looking to achieve that status, you’re going to need a little help. Unless the people you run into are extremely mean, you will probably luck out with this tip. Asking anyone you see that has a camera questions about photography is not only a great conversation starter that will probably get you some new friends, it can also lead to valuable advice. People around you take pictures all the time and I’m sure if you ask politely, they’ll be willing to spill the beans on their techniques and tips. You don’t have to ask tourists at Disney how to take better photos but if you see someone carrying a nicer looking camera (an indicator of their interest in the field), it should be a safe bet that they’ll be willing to talk.

2. Read and Apply

Books and magazines are a great way to keep up to date on new camera gear and tips for the hobby. There are probably more magazines than you can imagine about photography and even more books in regards to the field. Head over to your local bookstore and see if they carry either. I can almost guarantee that they do. The people that write for these magazines have been taking photos for a long time and their tips and tricks are an invaluable tool in your arsenal. Don’t sit and read the whole thing in one sitting either. Read a bit and practice. You’ll retain all of the information much better if you practice what you were taught and then move on to the next thing.

3. Experiment with Lighting

Now that you’re taking photos of everything you may notice that when you upload your photos to your computer or go down to have them printed out, the lightning may be off in some of them. There are happy mediums of light for any given exposure and in your experimenting you may end up with some very poorly lit photos. But in the end, it’s all worth it. You can try by buying some standup lights for your setup shots in a studio or in your home or practicing with a reflector that will bounce natural light up on the subject’s face or region that needs to be photographed. There are plenty of online tools that can help you figure out what you need to better light your photos and just playing around with different light angles and filters can help you get a better feel for how a photo should turn out.

4. Set Up a Studio

Now, let’s go into this whole “Be a better photographer” thing with the idea that you’re not looking to be a professional. But, even if you’re not wanting to take photography all the way to the point where you can quit your day job, you should still have a little professionalism in your hobby. Setting up a studio in your house or apartment is a great way to start understanding photography techniques. It doesn’t have to be anything big, just a backdrop (or multiple) and some lights that you can move around at will.

5. Avoid Overpriced Gear

Some people want to be photographers so badly that they think their current camera is a piece of junk and can’t do what they need. Wrong. The camera you have now is probably sufficient to get you by with what you’re looking to do. More often than not, ‘wannabe’ photographers go out and buy the most expensive Nikon or Sony they can find just because they think it will somehow make them better. While you may look cooler when walking around town with it, better gear does not make you a better photographer. Experience does. So put the notion out of your head that you need the most expensive lenses and camera bodies because some guy in a low-budget no-name camera store told you so.

6. Buy Better Gear

OK, the question that just popped into your head was “What the hell?” No, I’m not completely crazy. I know that the previous tip just told you to avoid buying new gear because you think you need it. Well that fact of the matter is, while you should avoid overpriced gear when you’re just starting out, at some point in time you’re going to need to ramp up your game. The low-level entry cameras that you buy from your local Wal-Mart and Best Buy are not going to hold you over if you want to get serious about this hobby. By all means hone your craft before you start looking to spend hundreds of dollars on a lens but if you’re already at the point where you need to start getting better photos out of your gear, it’s time for an upgrade. Companies like B and H Photo based out of New York City are a great resource for any photographer.

7. Take Criticism

One of the hardest things to do no matter what hobby or field you’re in is to take criticism. No one takes it well, I know. But it’s an essential part of growing as a photographer. Take some of the work you’ve done and post it on social sites like Facebook or Flickr. This will open you up to a much larger audience that can then tell you what they like and don’t like about a particular piece. Analyze the ones they do like and see what it is about those that makes them stand out. Take all of the elements of critique and areas of interest to your viewers and see if you can hone in on those in particular. This will help you get an eye for what you should be looking for in the lens.

8. Study Form

While you may be opposed to “corporate America” and how there is an ad around every corner in the subway station or on every billboard down the highway, you can actually learn something from all of this advertising. The photos that make it into our everyday life have more of an impact than you would care to think about. But what makes these photos “pop?” Take a look next time you’re waiting for a train or driving down the road. These photos had enough of an impact that a company was willing to put them all across the country for everyone to see. There must be something about them that makes them special.

9. Photo Editing

While photos in their raw form can often be the most beautiful, a lot of magic happens in post-production. Programs like Adobe Photoshop or even the free software, GIMP, can work wonders can take place after a photo has been uploaded to your computer. A lot of photos that you love and admire are more than likely products of post-production. It may sadden you to learn that the beauty you’re trying to achieve through a photo may actually only be possible to get when you sit down and edit the hell out of it. Imperfections are easily fixed and depending on whether or not you want to start a career in photography, you may have to “stoop down to their level.” Learning how to properly edit photos from great to fabulous is an art form in itself.

10. Be Yourself

Above all else, just be yourself when you’re taking photos. Don’t try to pretend that you’re a famous photographer that you’re not. Your art and expression will shine through even if you’re not the most well known photographer on the planet. Take pride in your work and work hard towards the ultimate goal of being better but don’t lose sight and give up just because your first photos are terrible. It takes time and if you take the time to enjoy what you’re doing, your photographic skills will increase ten-fold.

Those were some tips that will help you get started in the field of photography. If you have any that you would like to add, feel free to drop a comment below.

Have you ever wanted to create your own digital photography art? Well, all you need is a digital camera, photo-editing software, and a computer to create one. Here are a couple of techniques you can use to create your own digital photography art. Let’s begin.

Let’s try creating a digital photography pop art to start with. The images of Marilyn Monroe or other popular Andy Warhol art stuff may come to mind. And that’s exactly what we’re trying to go for. Here are some digital photography art techniques that you can do to achieve that kind of look. In this example, let’s make use of the photo-editing software that is popularly known as Adobe Photoshop.

The very first thing that you should do is to choose a digital photograph that you’ve taken. Choose something that inspires you. Choose the best digital photograph that you’ve taken and make sure that it’s also a simple and modular image to help you get started. It must be a line art image. Once you have it, open it up in Photoshop.

Now, make sure that your image is in RGB mode. If you don’t know how to do it, simply go to the menu bar and choose Image. Select the mode and then choose the RGB color.

Once you’re ready, it’s time to add some color to the digital photo. First, create a new layer. To do this, open up your Layers Palette and click on the button at the base that says “Create a New Layer”.

Now, at the tool box, choose the Paint Bucket tool. Then, select the option “All Layers” in the tool options bar. It will fill in the areas in your line art.

In the toolbox, choose the color for your foreground color and click OK once you’ve selected a color of your liking.

Now, go back to the paint bucket tool and click on the area of your image that you want to fill with your selected color. If you have other areas to fill with that color, simply repeat this step.

Now, you may choose another color and create a new layer to place that new color. Do as you’ve done in steps four to six until you’ve filled up your image with the colors you wanted.

Now it’s time to create your dots, meaning, some of the fills will be turned into dots. To do so, select the layer that you want to convert. Duplicate that layer. You can do so by right-clicking on it and choosing duplicate. Then, hide one of the two same layers. For the other layer, go to filter and then select pixelate and choose color halftone. You can adjust the maximum radius setting from 4 to 127, depending on your preference. It will simply adjust the size of your dots. Once you get the look that you like, you’re done!

Some parents just love sharing their passion with their kids. If you are among those parents who are into digital photography and want to introduce it to your kid, then here is a kid’s guide to digital photography through games. Ordinary digital cameras are fine to use simply because kids will be using it and you don’t want the expensive digital SLR’s to be broken now, do you? Most of the people who upgrade to digital SLR’s end up having two cameras – their digital SLR and their old point and shoot camera. But if you have had the old fashioned cameras, the 35 mm manual cameras from before, then that will work too. After all, you just want them to be introduced to the world of digital photography and you can start with simple photography games that will be explained below.

Another great thing about teaching kids about digital photography or photography in general, is that they learn to look at the world from a different angle. They start noticing patterns that they haven’t seen before. This is truly a great way to train your kids to grow to become artistic people. They get a fresh perspective on various things and get to build their creativity in the process. Digital photography also helps them document their life to be able to go back to those memories they’ve captured. But other than that, it is also a great communication tool. They will tend to take photos of what they are truly interested in. They get to experiment in their own little way and see that there’s so much out there to explore. It’s a great tool for kids in terms of learning and being creative. So now that you’re ready, let’s take a look at these fun activities and games that you can do to teach your kids digital photography.

Making a Daily Photo Journal. This is a great activity for them. Not only do you get to learn what they’ve been doing that day but you get to help them build creativity. All you have to ask them is to take one shot each day that they can compile in the computer or print to make a scrapbook at the end of the week or month. It also opens up the communication lines between parent and children. You get to talk with your kids and help them in taking better photos as well. It’s also a kind of keepsake that will surely be appreciated by your kids when they get older.

Mystery Photos. You can take shots of objects in a close-up shot and ask them to guess what that object is. It is a great game where your kids will surely learn a lot. They will also enhance their knowledge aside from loving digital photography. Example would be to take a close-up photo of the eyes of a pineapple or perhaps the shell of a turtle.

Photo Puzzle. You can make a homemade puzzle by taking a photo and pasting it onto a cardboard. Cut it into several pieces and let your kid assemble that puzzle.

Digital Photography has taken the interests of many. We have seen a great increase of people going into photography, be it as a hobby or as a new career they are willing to take. If you are among those people who are just getting into the world of digital photography, then perhaps it’s time to start learning about digital photography especially about digital photography light. Continue reading this guide on digital photography light.

First thing you should know is that photography is all about the light. You must always be aware of the lighting in your subject. Check the direction of the lighting. If you are to make digital photography more than just a hobby, you better invest on lighting equipment for your photography. If you are simply relying on those little flash or stock flash your digital camera has, you will not get those professional looking results in your photos. In some cases, it makes your subject’s eyes red. It’s good if your digital camera has red eye correction. But it still doesn’t make your photo any better. That small flash in your camera flattens faces and removes any shadow in the contours that will make your photo look more real, or in other words, more professional-looking.

It would be best to have lighting equipment and only use your camera’s flash if you don’t have any choice. Thus, it’s best to take photos on a well lighted area, be it indoors or outdoors. Outdoors, the sun will help you light your subject. Just make sure to do it either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. These times will offer you better effects as the lighting is warmer. The color of yellows and reds are stronger giving you a pleasing effect. If you want to achieve a 3D effect, it’s best to take photos of your subject where the sun is at the side of your subject. It’s not nice to take a photo with the sunlight behind because you can get flares in the subject and your subject may appear darker too, although sometimes, it can be used if you are going for a backlight effect.

Now, if you are planning to use your camera flash, here are some things that you should remember. When taking photos, keep the subject away from the wall especially for the lighter colored walls like white, cream, or beige among others. It will create a black outline that serves as the shadow of your subject. It is best to use dark background to avoid this.
