Tips on Digital Portrait Photography

by Ahmed Anwar on May 31, 2009

There are many types of digital photography that you can get into. If you want to focus on digital portrait photography, then here are some tips on digital portrait photography that you can try.

  1. To be able to avoid red-eye, sometimes you need to avoid using flash. But in order to do this, you must have enough available lighting. So when you’re doing this technique, you must be able to take portraits in well-lit areas. This will help you avoid those red eyes in your portraits. The reason why red eye happens is because the flash in digital cameras usually reflects badly off the retinas of the person and that makes it a bright red in your photos. Good thing that most digital cameras nowadays have the built-in feature of removing the red eye in your photos. Look for the red-eye reduction flash mode to use for your digital portrait photography. But they are not perfect. Sometimes they don’t always result to what their supposed to be. Of course, there are photo editing software to help you remove that red eye but that will be extra work to do. So to avoid such, just try using other sources of light aside from the camera’s flash.
  2. Another great tip in digital portrait photography is making use of overexposure. Why should you overexpose? The reason is to reduce blemishes. In taking digital portrait photographs, the goal is to make your subject beautiful. Blemishes and other imperfections must be avoided as much as possible. To hide those blemishes or reduce them, a slight overexposure will greatly help. It’s a technique that will reduce those blemishes as well as other variations in your subject’s skin or face. Overexposing somehow reduces some detail in photos and by slightly overexposing your subject the blemishes might get washed out. Just make sure to experiment first to come up with the perfect result without washing out the other facial features of your subject. If this couldn’t help, you can still rely on your reliable photo-editing software.
  3. To ask your subject/s to getting in close is another technique used in digital portrait photography. The last thing you want to do is to cut out one of your subject’s face. So don’t be afraid to tell your subjects to get in closer together. This will make sure that you get everyone’s face in the LCD. You don’t want an ear or hair to be cut from the photo. If you have to crop, you can do that later on.
  4. Avoid filling the frame with your subject’s face. Sometimes, if you don’t make use of a leveling device like a tripod, your photo may not be straight. And so you will need to rotate the picture a bit in a photo-editing software. But if you have filled the whole frame with your subject’s face, then you have no room to rotate the image. You must allow some bit of space to be able to crop or rotate a bit if things like this happen.
