  1. First of all, you need to have the right accessories. One, you will need a tripod when doing infrared digital photography. Since you will be using long exposure, even minimal camera shake will result to blurred pictures. Therefore, a stable base is needed. Also, you will be using an infrared filter. This filter enables the invisible light to enter the sensor and at the same time hinders the visible light to pass through.

  2. Try to shoot in RAW format when doing infrared photography. In this way, you can easily post process your photos if you are not satisfied with the results. Your pictures remain undistorted even after editing.

  3. To achieve the desired outcome, try various levels of ISO. Although keep in mind that as you increase the ISO, the quality of your picture deteriorates. If you like post processing your pictures, it is advisable to refrain from using high levels of ISO as the noise could cause problem when you magnify the image. In order to have excellent outcome, the suggested level is ISO 200. If you prefer your photo to have that grainy texture, it is better to just edit the image to achieve this.

  4. Another tip in enhancing your infrared photo is by adjusting the white balance. Since the infrared filter blocks the visible light from the camera’s sensor, it is important to adjust the white balance of your camera.

  5. If you are going to shoot a moving subject, such as moving water, make sure that your digital camera is capable of doing long shutter. This will make the water look smooth and flowing.

  6. When taking infrared photos, aside from using slow shutter speed, the aperture should also be narrow. Just play with different shutter speed and aperture combinations until you achieve the desired infrared picture. Also, take note that when you change your exposure, make sure your lens is in focus.

  7. Of course, practice is the key to make your infrared pictures perfect. You really can’t get it right the first time. It is through practice where you gain experience on the proper infrared photography styles and techniques.
